James May is back on the BBC in just over half an hour doing his “Cars of the People” again.

Sadly, it won’t feature a Sandero or indeed any Dacia. An Allegro is promised though.

The Meccano motorcycle on the Isle of Mann was something I was looking forward to and was disappointed. It was a 15 minute piece at best and he stretched it over an entire episode. His partner getting lunch and walking along beside him eating bread was the highlight.

Bit of trivia for you - the Daihatsu Compagno that May drove is the exact same one Clarkson drove in his Japanese-themed Car Years episode 16 years ago.

Actually, adding on to that, the poo-brown Allegro is the same too.

That was a superior bit of TV. The little TG dig was nicely delivered.

Have to admit, being close to Mr May’s age, I was slightly choked at what the Allegro could’ve been, but - even if it looked better - they’d still have struggled to make it. Glad he didn’t mention the Princess as well. Yes, I know TG said it was the best car British Leyland ever made, but that’s not much of a compliment.

My stepdad had one of those ordinary first-gen Celica, I can’t remember the model, probably an ST, not a liftback... And he put a spoiler on it. What was it going to do?

I know that the whole point of the show was to highlight how Germany and Japan “won” but an aside referencing the kind-of British Ford (Escort, Capri, Cortina, Granada, Fiesta etc) and Vauxhall (Cheap crapbox, crapbox, more expensive but fast crapbox) would’ve been nice.

BTW, as a responsible adult, I didn’t want to effectively repost/hijack, just thought that if I put the “Car’s Of The People” graphic up more people would watch. Tried to put a link back to this but Kinja kept binning it for some reason.

Yes, I think he did the “old TG” reference well.

Overall though I thought that the “relative fuel consumption” segment went on too long and he was a bit snide about some of the British cars.

Interesting how he described how BMW went straight on to making upmarket cars after the war without saying how this almost broke them and they had to make Isetta bubblecars until they got the Neue Klasse up and running...

I suppose you’ve got to “tell a story” nowadays - mentioning the Isetta would distract from the broad sweep. The fuel consumption bit did feel like we’ve-got-to-put-a-TG-style-stunt-in.

Oh, and I didn’t know about the added bit in the Moggie.
